A new oral antibiotic has been developed to treat and prevent a bacterial infection, a new study shows.
In a clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, scientists from the University of Michigan performed a randomized, double-blind trial with the combination of Azithromycin, the same drug used to treat rickettsial infections, and doxycycline, a commonly prescribed macrolide.
The treatment consisted of one 500-mg dose of azithromycin and doxycycline per day, and a single 500-mg dose of doxycycline per day. The combination was administered once or twice daily for two weeks.
The research, led by lead researcher Dr. James M. Allen of the University of Michigan's School of Medicine, was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the combination.
"The results of the study showed that both the azithromycin and doxycycline doses were as effective and safe as the two antibiotics, against a broad spectrum of pathogenic strains of the bacteria responsible for causing rickettsial infections," Dr. Allen said. "We are pleased with the results of this study and look forward to our next phase of development, where the combination of the two drugs may be able to offer a viable alternative to standard treatment regimens."
